Alton was settled in the early 1800s on the banks of Shaw's Creek (a tributary of the Credit River) and was a thriving industrial centre.

Forks of the Credit Provincial Park
Forks of the Credit Provincial Park, located in Caledon, Ontario, Canada, is part of the Ontario Parks system and is part of the Niagara Escarpment biosphere. The park is on the Bruce Trail. The Credit River runs through the park. Other notable features of the park include a kettle lake and talus slope.
Forks of the Credit Inn
The historic Forks of the Credit Inn was built in 1855 in the quaint hamlet of Cataract, Caledon. The building was originally a post office, the DewDrop Inn in the late 1800’s and a general store with speakeasy (hidden upstairs) during prohibition in the early 1900’s. The Cataract Inn was a popular restaurant here until 2006. Recently revitalized, this building is once again a Boutique Inn and new Yoga Retreat Centre in the beautiful Caledon Hills.
Belfountain Conservation Area
Belfountain Conservation Area is located on the Niagara Escarpment in the West Credit River Valley. This 32 acre property features a suspension bridge that spans a beautiful waterfall, a fountain, other historic structures and a connection to the Bruce Trail.
